Match Report: 5th September, 1:30PM, Buntingford, Conference Fixture
Middle order collapse sinks Bamville Titanic
Result:
Buningford 205 ao; Bamville 128ao
Nice pitch and good outfield, in Buntingford just north of Stevenage. Jeff, maybe we should play them every year. This is a team that had won a league recently. Batting first they gave a hint how they did it with a 94 run opening partnership going about 6 an over. Opening bowlers Iqbal and Matt though bowled reasonably well were not successful in getting any wickets. We were joined by 3 new players in this match, one of them Vivek bowled first change and found good rhythm. Darren broke the opening stand in 17th over. Soon Vivek got two in one over, and another one by Darren as Buntingford slipped from 94/0 from 16 overs to 101/4 in 19 overs. Some good middle order batting by opposition skipper saw run rate rise as score jumped to 169/4 in 26 overs. I then got two freaky but lucky wickets while another newbie Kurian cleaned up on other end getting 3 wickets for 20 runs in his 6 overs. Butingford finished on 205 all out.
Kurian and Raj opened our batting and looked good. Kurian was first to go caught behind. Darren joined Raj and both looked set when Raj got bowled for 18. Newbie Amit joined Darren and both had a decent 46 run partnership to take Bamvill to 66/3 of 15 when Amit got out for 14. As I went into bat Darren went into overdrive, hitting 3 boundaries off same over. With the ball crossing the boundary every over we rocketed to 110/3 of 19 overs well above asking run rate. One felt what can possibly go wrong in our journey, so we should steam ahead our insinkable Titanic.
Darren then missed a full toss to get bowled for a solid 42, Simon edged one to gully for 0, Vivek bowled for 0 on his third delivery, and I gave a simple caught & bowled (for 22) to reduce Bamville to 111/7 in 23. A Buntigford iceberg rather a torpedo tore us apart with 4 wickets for 1 run in 3 overs, & Bamville ship started sinking.
Iqbal and Dave tried to keep us afloat, but the life boats came far too late and could not carry us all the way through. Captain Geoff was the last man on board as we sank to 128/10 in 30 overs.
Every night in my dreams I feel "we could have batted better !!!"
MOTM : Vivek & Kurain playing after a long time were in reckoning with good economy rate and 5 wickets to share between them. But Darren with his 2 wickets & 42 runs was the architect in our incompleted voyage.
Match Report: 30th August, 2:00PM, Great Gaddesden, Bamville CC
Result:
Bamville 169-8 (35 overs); Great Gaddesden 170-1
We all arrived for the 1:30 and we were ready to go. Jeff then revealed he might have told the opposition it was a 2:00 start so Miles gave us some catching practice. We decided on Andrew Cripps as the skipper for the day, he lost the toss and we were sent into bat. Pete Robinson and Harry Harrison opened up and took advantage of their bowlers not being particularly threatening. They had a cracking partnership of 75 before Pete went for 31. Mark Eddison then came in and scored 14 staying there with Harry keeping up 5 an over. Harry then went, after looking set for 50, for 42. This started a mini collapse as we lost 3 wickets, Brian Roberts middled a full-toss but decided to pick out their best fielder 10 yards in front of him for not a lot, slowing the run rate. I then joined Andrew out in the middle and we managed to stick around until Andrew didn't connect with one and was out for 30 after a partnership of 44. Jeff Chapman then joined me in the middle for a couple of over before I decided to fall for the bowlers slower ball for 21. Jeff then finished the innings with a cracking drive for four so we finished with 169-8.
We started off with Lee Anderson and Darren Hincks bowling but they couldn't find their rhythm against their openers' hard-hitting. I then came on (5-0-16-0) and so did Jeff but we couldn't get any luck although there were edges flying everywhere that no-one could do anything about. Jeff was replaced by Justin Heyes and we both continued to find the edge but not the fielder. Kevin Edgington replaced me but couldn't get the breakthrough Both their batsman passed 50 but Justin managed top get the breakthrough in his last over, their batsman getting 59 with an opening partnership of 136. Darren (7-0-40-0) and Lee (7-2-21-0) both returned on the other end while Justin bowled but couldn't get a wicket despite being very tight. Jeff (4-0-34-0) replaced Justin (6-0-33-1), and it was still four an over but their batsman decided to end it with a few overs to spare on 94*. Andrew kept well behind the stumps and Mark took a good catch for the only wicket.
Thank you to Miles for opening up for us and the Chapmans for a superb tea, if only we had fielded first we could have enjoyed it more! A very close match that, although it doesn't look it, could have gone either way and was a very good match to have watched.
MOTM: James Riley Justin got the only wicket, Harry had a good knock of 42, Andrew was tidy behind the stumps and had a very good thirty. But apparently I deserved it for my score of 21 at the end of the innings, holding it together plus getting valuable runs and my tight bowling, 5-0-16-0, which I don't know how I didn't get a wicket with.
Match Report: 23rd August, 2:00PM, Hawridge & Cholesbury, Bamville CC
Early start, early finish
Result:
H&C 280-3 (40 overs); Bamville 180 a/o (39 overs)
Bamville's players arrived early for the first 1:30 start of the season. By the time the sight-screens were up and the stumps were in, we'd missed the start time by about 10 minutes but we still left ourselves plenty of time to finish before dark.
Hawridge & Cholesbury won the toss and after inspecting the pitch decided to bat. Lee and Matt opened the bowling but couldn't find the right spot and were punished by H&C's Aussie opener (who was mocked throughout the afternoon by his team-mates as Ashes updates came through).
Pec decided to take Lee off after just 2 overs and brought himself on to try and reduce the run-rate. It worked at one end but they were still scoring freely at the other end. After Matt's spell, Darren Hincks was given the ball to bowl his usual straight-and-full deliveries that have worked so well in previous matches. Unfortunately today, this wasn't the case and the opposition continued to pick up runs at a rate of 7 or 8 an over.
Pec finally managed to pick up the first wicket but by this time the score was well over 100. Even the introduction of Muks couldn't stem the run-rate much and Kevin's legspin was ineffective against the aggressive Aussie opener. With options running out, Pec turned to Rich and within a couple of overs, the Aussie had his middle-stump knocked back, and despite twice having the left-handed no.4 dropped Rich picked up a 2nd wicket later on.
With the run-rate consistently over 7 for much of the innings, 280-3 seemed a lower score than possible but would still be difficult to chase.
After tea, Pec sent out Bob and Mick to try and pick up a few quick runs. In just the second over, Bob was bowled and Martin went in. Mick tried his luck and was dropped twice but eventually his luck ran out. Pec was in at no.4 but didn't manage to pick up many runs before getting himself out. 9 overs in, 3 wickets down - it wasn't looking good.
Rich (30) and Martin (50+) managed to put away the bad balls over the next few overs, pushing the score along at a similar rate to H&C in the first innings but then Rich threw his wicket away when set.
A good innings from Darren followed but he was forced to watch from the non-striker's end as one of the bowlers took 2 wickets in 2 balls but Kevin managed to block out the hat-trick ball.
The match finished with a great reaction catch at short mid-wicket to end Darren's innings in the 39th over.
After a long drive we reached Cryselco park in Kempston just south of Bedford on time (except me & Ash who joined after first couple of overs). We were fielding when I came on the ground, so no idea who won the toss. Neil & Iqbal had opened our bowling. Kempston batsmen looked good and tried to play aggressive, but were held back, till first bowling change. James and Geoff were first change. Kempston started attacking and the run rate went up. James got the first break, when he got their opener caught by Iqi. Ash bowled well to get a couple of wickets. Kempston hero (J Housden) though kept punishing us as he played a good hand of 75 runs off 80 balls. Kempston finished at very impressive 202 in 40 overs.
Paul H & Raj opened for us. We didnt start well as Paul was caught in the first over, and Raj was injured in the second. That brought Paul A and Peter on crease who steadied the innings a bit. Paul A scored a good aggressive 20. This ground had a very slow outfield and we were struggling to keep up with the asking rate of 5 an over. Raj went back after Paul's dismissal and tried his shots but it wasnt easy. When Peter got out for (15 off 58 balls) we were 85/3 in 23 overs needing 118 of 17 overs @ 7/over. Both me (22 off 23 balls) and Raj (49 off 71 balls) attacked, followed by aggressive knocks by Neil (12-ball 18), Darren and others. But we never caught up with the asking rate. Wickets kept falling as we tried increasing the run rate. We finally finished at 169 from 36.3 overs.
MOTM : Raj with his 49 was a obvious contender, So was Neil who bowled at a economy rate of 1.5 runs an over (8 ovrs 12 Runs) , caught a stunner off Iqbal's bowling and batted at a strike rate of 150.
Match Report: 15th August, 2:00PM, Aldenham, Aldenham
Bamville inflict Aldenham's first Saturday defeat of the season.
Result:
Bamville 167 a/o; Aldenham 145 a/o
The good weather continued in Aldenham last week. We batted first on nice looking pitch. Phil Oliver and Peter Moss opened for Bamville. Aldenham opening bowlers looked very good though. Peter was first to go with a bouncy caught behind. That brought wildcard no 3 Iqbal on crease, he hit a boundary and soon departed. Darren joined his brother to stabilise the innings, but soon we saw Phil caught behind of the same bowler for 14. From 24 for no loss we reached 36 for 3. I joined Darren and got advice from him and Ash to not lose my wicket. But the devil in me for some reason thought it was a good time to hook their best bowler on my first ball, which i did unsuccessfully to give a simple catch. 36 / 4 now. Vince joined Darren and they looked like holding the innings together when Vince got out to the same opening bowler caught behind for 10. Lee followed for a duck (not golden like me) to give that bowler his 5 wicket haul. At 52/6 100 looked difficult. Ash joined Darren and they had a 30 run partnership, before he got out trying to hit and skying one in the air. Bob Norrish got a poor decision (though the sound was sharp & woody) caught behind to put us at 82/8. Darren and Muks tried to move on, but at 112 Darren was caught & bowled for a nice 36. As we were accepting the fact that we may finish around 125 or so, the star performers of the day got into act. Jeff chapman started with 3 dot balls, but in next 6 balls he hit 5 boundaries. Muks was not going to stay behind, so he hit 3 boundaries in next two overs. In just above 8 overs we moved from 112 to 167 when Jeff was run out. Both Jeff and Muks got 32 each.
Lee & Jeff started Bamville bowling attack. But Aldenham had sent Afridi like character (with green helmet) on crease. He greeted Jeff with two 6's and two 4's in his first over. Lee in meanwhile got rid of the other opener lbw. When Jeff went another two 6's in his third over we knew we had to stop this guy. I bowled the 8th over of the day trying to take the pace off, and it worked. After missing my turning delivery on 2nd ball and then being fooled in the air on 3rd (almost got caught), their aggressive opener skied one towards long on which Iqbal caught comfortably. They had another really good bat who was dealing in boundaries. Muks and Iqbal replace me and Lee, and tried to hold back Aldenham. Muks got rid of the accomplished bat caught by Darren and bowled a miserly spell of 6 ovrs 7 runs 1 wicket. Iqbal got the other bat LBW, before he finished his first spell. This was a time game and at 6.30 PM when the last 20 overs started Aldenham were 80 for 4, requiring 88 of last 20. After drinks Ash and Peter Moss bowled in tandem and bamboozled Aldenham with their spin. Ash got 3 wickets of which one was sharp off cutter to take batsman’s middle stump. On other side Lee got a direct hit run out from deep cover. Aldenham slipped from 102/4 to 116/8. But they had a very good 9th wicket partnership and the game was slipping from our hands when Iqbal fielded of a lightning fast shot to run out their inform batsman. The score was 145/9 with 2 overs to go. Darren continued his tight spell, with the opposition needing 18 of last over. We needed to take that last wicket or else it was draw. Iqbal bowling the last over did just that, He bowled their 5 wicket taker batsman to secure the Bamville win.
MOTM : Iqbal, Ash, Darren were good contenders. But Men-OTM had to be Jeff & Muks for their 55 run final wicket partnership which set the game for us.
Match Report: 8th August, 2:00PM, Codicote, Codicote
Ani Jabba's on and on...
Result:
BCC 179 ao; Codicote 124 ao
Sunny baking 25c temperature welcomed us at Codicote. This was much better than last year when the game was washed off at the same venue. The pitch was damp and didn’t look good from the start. Codicote won the toss and put us in. First few overs confirmed our suspicion. The pitch was very slow and yet 1 in 3 balls would bounce above chest height. Peter and Raj opened and were adjusting well. But Peter was first to suffer from the slowness of the pitch when he got a leading edge and got caught and bowled.
Phantom Menace While it looked tricky to play on this track, Raj and Darren made batting look easy. They adapted to this pitch very well and caused menace for Codicote by hitting a boundary each over. The opposition helped us by dropping Raj on 26 and then on 34. This meant the acceleration was on and this duo from another planet took us to 73/1 in 17 overs.
Revenge of the Sith While it looked like Darren and Raj were set for a big one, Codicote had a trick up their sleeve. Their bowler Jones (Sith) knew exactly how to use the odd bounce in the pitch. His first victim was Raj who gloved on a high bounce delivery caught by keeper. Darren facing on the other end was done by a quick one with a sharp catch. Soon Phil & I were found lacking in technique to adapt to this track. Phil was bowled and I couldn’t keep the ball down on an awkward bounce. Bob looked good, but got almost a similar delivery like me and it took off his glove and caught by keeper. That brought Nigel on the crease in a rush. He got a good ball first up bowled by a yorker. Score now read 94/7 in 23 overs. Jones figures at that point were 6 overs 5 wickets for 14 runs.
Return of the Jedi Now when 120 was looking tough, Ash and Vincent (two new Jedis) showed their true powers. They saw off Jones, and attacked the other weaker bowlers very well. Ash hit 4 boundaries scored a brisk 34, while Vince played the steady role on other end. Their partnership of 59 came about in 12 overs, when Ash got out caught at square leg. The score was 153/8 of 35 overs. Vince then became the aggressor and hit 3 boundaries in next 2 overs and score moved quickly to 165. Iqbal joined the party and hit a boundary before getting caught. This meant Jeff at no 11 came to bat. (Everyone in Saturday team gets to bat).
Bamville Empire strikes back it was now time for the Codicote to face the music on this tricky pitch. Their scoreboard soon read 15/3 after 7 overs with Iqbal trying to bounce them out with every ball. He claimed their first two wickets. Jeff started well and got their technically correct batsmen LBW. Iqbal continued his assault and soon they were 46/4 in 13 overs and his figures read 7 ovrs 14 runs 3 wickets. Bob Norrish took a stunning diving catch. Nigel and Vince continued from where Iqbal and Jeff left. Nigel got rid of the main attacking batsman who was scoring all the runs. Then followed it up with another wicket before Darren replaced him. Both Oliver brothers continued taking wickets between them. Codicote finally finished at 124 all out.
MOTM Vince 33 and Ash 34 were close contenders with their vital partnership and 1 wicket each. (Sorry Vince if i would have caught that one you would have 2 wickets). But Raj's opening assault of 41 runs and 4 catches made him the MOTM.
Match Report: 6th August, 6:00PM, Crabtree (Twenty20), Rothamsted Park
Rain fails to stop play
Result:
BCC 100 from 15 overs; Crabtree 93 off 15 overs.
Most of us reached Rothamstead park at 5.30 pm in rainy wet conditions almost certain the match would be called off. It was slippery but we decided to play. Iqbal was our self proclaimed captian who decided to bat. The match was reduced to a 15 overs game. Peter R and Lee A opened and scored brisk 25 each before Lee retired (max 25) and Peter got out. Charlie and myself went in played our shots and up the ante. At 10 over mark we were already reaching 70. Bob, Iqbal and others followed and batted well to take us to 98 of 14. Last over was bowled well and we only managed 2 more to take our total to 100 of 15 overs.
Pram started our bowling attack with a very economical first over. James R, Charlie Y, Justin H bowled next three overs and put further pressure on them. They were struggling to bat on wet wicket and were going about 5 runs an over. Iqbal then came and took 2 wickets in his first over and it looked curtains for Crabtree. But then this was a friendly, so we got our part timers to bowl, and threw a life line for the opposition. Wickets kept falling but then there was a good 6th wicket partnership between Matt Arnerich (who should have played for us instead of Crabtree) and another good bat who had to retire at 25 at a score of 71 of 12 overs. Matt A did more damage in the next over of Pram when he hit him for six and two boundaries. That took them to 87 of 13 overs. Iqbal did the best part of his captaincy then by bringing Justin to bowl the penultimate over. First ball saw Matt A bowled, second the next batsman bowled, followed by 4 dot balls. They needed 14 of last over and that was always going to be difficult. They finished on 93 of 15.
MOTM : Has to be Justin for his excellent second over finishing at figures of 2 ovrs 7 runs 2 wickets.
Match Report: 2nd August, 2:00PM, Edlesborough, Bamville CC
Another defeat snatched from the jaws of victory
Result:
Eddlesborough 150-9; BCC 129 all out
We started well. We lost the toss but they chose to bat which is what we wanted as our batting was not as strong as it could be, and we kept the runs down well and took wickets regularly. Charlie Yates bowled with great pace and accuracy, and between him, Matt, and Jeff Chapman they were kept to about 50 off the first 20 overs. Kevin Edgington bowled a great few overs of leg spin thaking a wicket in his first over.
But then Les, their gnarled wicket keeper, came in and scored his customary 50, unbeaten as usual, and they managed to get to 150-9 at the end of 40 overs.
And it was going so well batting too. We were rollicking along and all our top four made good starts. Tony Heyes got a quick 15, Mukesh batted well, and Rich Harle and Bob Norrish looked like they were going to win it for us before Rich was out for 26 and the rot set in. Our inexperienced middle order looked like a lot like England's, and only one other player got into double figures (before gifting his wicket again) and we were all out inside 35 overs, 21 runs short.
MOTM goes to Bob Norrish for a stylish 34 and some excellent glovework - tremendous catch off a Chalrie Yates rocket.
Match Report: 1st August, 2:00PM, Bourne End, Bourne End
Moral victory by Duckworth Lewis
Result:
Bourne End 193 from 30 overs; BCC 51/1 off 8 match abandoned due to rain
Most of usreached Bourne end by 1.30 with rainy forecast in mind. With no one from thehome side present memories of how they stood us up last year startedcoming back. Just as we were about to give up any hope of a game around 2 PM,some players from the home side turned up. After Darren showed some urgency the oppositionagreed to toss in drizzling conditions and we eventually started playing at2.30.
Darren wonthe toss and put the home side in. Iqbal and Ash started well and for fewminutes it looked like we would able to hold back the two aggressive openers. Butthat hope was short lived, our spearhead Iqbal got hit for three consequtiveboundaries and Darren had to start thinking about alternatives. He decided totake the pace off the ball and I found myself bowling spin in the 7th over ofthe day. Soon Ash and me were on the receiving end and boundaries were hitregularly. We then were replaced by Darren and Peter Moss. Both bowled verywell, especially Peter who got rid of one opener and quickly followed that upwith getting their number 3. He almost got the other opener LBW on a reversesweep, but the (under 15) umpire found it too difficult to give their bestbatsman out. While all this was happening a constant drizzle was on and at onepoint I slipped and Darren was considering coming off. Neverthless we carriedon (but reduced the match to a 30 over game as a full game looked unlikely atthat stage). Phil Oliver made an impressive bowling debut. I had good timebowling my second spell in death overs and getting rid of their centurianopener expertly stumped like a pro by Simon Cripps. The opposition finallyfinished at a score of 193 (openers scoring 150 + between themselves).
Tea wasbetter than many other places btw.
While we had an extended tea, the rain got heavier and we struggled to get out tobat even after 5.30 pm. With the conditions showing no sign of improvement wedecided to start batting anyway. I opened with Andy Cripps. In less than 10mins I was back in pavilion bowled yorked by their slowish medium pacer(Disgraceful I know - not getting out - getting bowled I mean). Raj came in at no3 and started playing his shots. He looked good but he was in pain aggrevatingsome injury he picked up when fielding. I padded up again to be his runner, butweighing his options he decided it was better to come off :). That broughtAamir to the crease and he hit 4 boundaries for his 9 ball 16 with Andy playingsteady at 17 on the other end. The score was 51 for 1 off 8 overs (well oncourse of chasing that 193 of 30) when all hell broke loose and it rained cats& dogs.
Match was abandoned as the pitch / outfield was too dangerous to play. No-one had the D/L tables to hand or we would surely have won.
MOTM : Verydifficult to have MOTM in a abandoned match, but purely on bowling stats, Philcame close to be one with figures of (3 overs 8 runs for 2 wickets). If only hewouldn't have dropped their centurian opener off my bowling when he was in histwenties some of the other guys could have got better figures. Peter Mosssurely was a joint contender as well.
Match Report: 26th July, 2:00PM, Bricket Wood, Bamville CC
Extras extras!
Result:
Bricket Wood 203 (40 overs); Bamville 204-9
On winning the toss I put Bricketwood in and we got off to a good start; in my first over I took a wicket and also had a wicket in my second over. All the bowlers bowled well however Bricket Wood ended with 203 in their 40 overs. (I suppose we ought to mention the huge number of wides - I think extras scored 50! - NQ) Darren Hincks got 3 wickets and bowled a good spell as did James Riley (who got the wicket of their top bat - for 49), Ian Wedd, Nigel, and John Harle who should have had at least two LBW's. We also had a very good spell from Errol playing his first game. Our run chase began well and I was the first one to get bowled for 15. Bob and John Harle had an execllent partnership and also ran very well. They had taken the score to over a 100 before Bob got run out backing up too far for a very good 33. John got himself caught in the same over for a very good 55. We continued to lose wickets but at the same time our run rate was very good. We had another good partnership between Richard and Ian. Richard was the first to go trying to hook their best bowler. Ian kept the score moving along and he fell for a good 39 with 4 runs left to score. We were 200/7 which quickly became 200/9 but we managed to pull past Bricketwood with a wide and 2 no balls (not inappropriate given the number of extas in their innnings- NQ). Another close game.
Match Report: 19th July, 2:00PM, Chesham Bois, Bamville CC
Good game, wrong result
Result:
Chesham Bois 144 for 5 (35 overs) BCC 130 after 35 overs
Great close game against Chesham Bois. put them in on winning the toss and the match was reduced to 35 overs as it was raining. They scored 144 from 35 overs and we fell short by 14 runs. Nigel was our stand out bowler with 3 for 22 from his 7 overs but our batting let us down once again. That we managed to get close to their score was due to a good partnership between Jeremy and Richard. Richard went on to score a bright 39.
Match Report: 18th July, 2:00PM, Chaseville, Chaseville CC
Beaten twice over
Result:
BCC 83 ao, Chaseville 84 for not many
On a very difficult wicket our batsmen were put to the sword - 1/1, 2/2, 3/3, 4/4 was the start they made. Thanks to Ani (22) a slightly respectable total of 83 was posted.
Iqbal did his best to stop them, bowling 11 overs for not many runs and taking 3 wickets, but Chaseville chased this down quite quickly.
So quickly that there was time for a 12 over thrash - but again it was Bamville who were on the recieving end. I don't have the details but suffice to say it was a day to forget.
Match Report: 12th July, 2:00PM, Harpenden Cavaliers, Bamville CC
Another close win
Result:
Cavaliers 165-9 (40 overs); Bamville 166-8
Another close match and once again we won. Having won the toss I put the Cavaliers into bat on what looked like a slightly damp wicket. They raced to 40 from the first 6 overs. Jeff had to go off the field as he pulled a back muscle and as Matt could not get his lines right we were forced to change both the bowlers. Michel and I replaced the opening bowlers and we both chipped awaywith Michel getting 3 for 25 from his 8 and I had 2 for 23 from my 8. MickTizzard took three execellent catches. Muks took a couple of wickets in his spell and Richie picked up one as well. The Cavaliers managed to score 165 for 9 in their 40 overs.
We needed a good start and Mick went of to a flyer in the second over taking 3 fours off the bowlerbefore he was bowled. I came in at 3 and Martin and I scored at a very good rate until I, as usual, holed out for 33. Amir came in and started playing his shots and got a very good 35.When he was out we required 40 runs from 16 overs and we started to lose wickets as well. Michel went in with us requiring 15 from 5; he kept a cool head and hit the winning boundary with an over to spare.
Man of the Match: Michel for his bowling as well as his batting
Match Report: 11th July, 2:00PM, Kimpton, Kimpton CC
Kimpton Make it a Double
Result:
BCC 188; Kimpton 189-?
Bamville scored 188, with skipper Darren Oliver getting 70+ but it proved to be too few runs given the lack of regular bowlers in the Bamville side, and Kimpton romped home in around 30 overs for their second win over us in less than a month.
No news on MOTM yet from Darren - too modest perhaps??
(More players needed for Saturday matches so we can pick a balanced team!)
Match Report: 4th July, 2:00PM, Penn Street, Penn Street
Just desserts for Bamville
Result:
BCC 215 from 40 overs, PennStreet 209 ao
The right team won on the day – which was Bamville of course – following some disappointingly partial umpiring from the home side – well we would say that wouldn’t we? We played the game in the right spirit and in the end we won the game.
On winning the toss Penn Street put us in on a greenish pitch with the ball swinging like a banana. We lost 2 wickets for 2 runs before Paul and I steadied the innings and used up a few overs. I was first to go and Paul followed soon after. Good cameo from Anirudha of 29.
We were 79 for six when Ash and Amir came in to bat and had a very good partnership with Ash getting a good 24. The star of our innings was Amir who went on to hit a very good 69. At 78/6 I would have settled for 130 to 140, but the way all the lower order batted we managed to get 215 from our 40 overs.
Iqbal got us off to very good start with a wicket in his first over and another in his third over. Charlie bowled well at the other end but did not get the break through, Michel and I replaced them, and I went on to take two wickets in my spell from 8 overs. Ash replaced me and after softening up their no 3 with a full toss on his elbow, he took a stunning caught and bowled the next ball which was travelling like a bullet. This wicket won us the game as he was scoring all their runs. Iqbal in his second spell picked up one more as did Charlie who should have had a caught behind as well. Michel was also unlucky not to get a caught behind as well as a plumb lbw. We won in the last over by 6 or 8 runs when we had the last batsman run out going for two runs.
Match Report: 28th June, 2:00PM, Ivanhoe, Bamville CC
Always check with the scorer!
Result:
Bamville 140 a/o, Ivanhoe 140-6 (40 overs)
We had a tied match which according to the score board read Bamville
141 and Ivanhoe on 134 needing 7 runs from the last ball.As it turned out someone put the wrong runs
on the board ! The real score for us was
140 and they needed a 6 from the last ball which their batsmen duly hit meaning
the scores were level hencea tied
match.
I lost the toss and it meant we had to bat on a slow damp
wicket and the ball doing all sorts.Paul
Robin and Pete Moss both were out to one that kept very low and I fell to a rash
shot trying to up the scoring for 33. We have Jeremy, Simon and Richard Harle
to thank for getting us to 140.
Ivanhoe raced to 36 for 1 of 6 overs with Jeremy getting a
wicket in his first over. We managed to get their run rate really down with
Paul Robin bowling an excellent spell 8 overs 2 wicket for 5 runs and 5
maidens.Lee also chipped in with a good
spell of just 16 runs from his 8 overs.
The man of the match goes to Jeremy for his batting and
bowling; 26 valuable runs and 2 wickets.
On a hot, sunny day after
winning the toss we inserted the oppostition. After five overs of
tight opening bolwing by Iqbal and Mike Taylor the oppostion found
themselves 8-4. and after some gentle, mid-innings bowling and then some late
hitting the oppostion managed 170 with Iqbal taking four wickets.
A good
opening stand between Muks and Paul Hughes (41), then some late hitting
by Anirudha and a three ball 14 from Iqbal, with a backdrop of thunder
and lighting, led to Anirudha scoring the winning run just as the
terrentional rain came pouring down.
MOTM: Iqbal for four wickets, a run
out and his 14 of three balls right at the end.
Match Report: 21st June, 2:00PM, Outlaws, Bamville CC
Bamville reliant on Robin
Result:
Outlaws 138 ao, BCC 140-8
On winning the toss Peck put the Outlaws in to bat, despite the Kimpton experience, and we got off to a great start with Matt and Nigel getting wickets in their first few overs and reducing Outlaws to 23/3. Paul Robin replaced Matt and he bowled his 8 overs for very few runs and got 2 wickets. Meanwhile John Harle was taking regular wickets at the other end. We fielded well and took all the catches on offfer with Pete Moss pulling of a superb one handed catch in the gully to get rid of their top bat who had scored most of the runs. We had them 103/9 but the last pair put on 37 runs before Nigel bowled their last man.
We went in to bat needing only 139 runs from 40 overs but nearly lost the match as we got of to a very slow start; after 13 overs we were only 12 for 2, Harry scoring 1 run from 45 balls before John Harle put him out of his misery with an atrocious LBW decision. It was not the start we needed and with wickets falling at regular intervals we had Paul Robin to thank for our victory as he played a great innings of 70 not out. He was very well supported towards the end by Michel who scored a very valuable 1 not out.
Having been put in to bat, a good batting performance from
everyone - Geoff 29, Paul 27, Richard 21 and others in double figures - meant we set
a target of 160 to win. Once Jeff Chapman 8-5-11-3 and Miles 8-6-5-2 (6 scoring
stokes in 96 balls)had finished they were too far behind the rate to win and
were finally bowled out for 98. Also worth a mention was a stunning diving
catch from Paul Hughes.

Tizzard in need of support
Result:
Kimpton 205 in 40 overs, BCC 195
On winning the toss against Kimpton
Peck put them in to bat, they went on to score 205 in 40 overs.
We got a good start to our batting from Mick Tizzard who scored 72 but we lost
the match as they rest of us did not score enough runs finally falling about 10 short.
Choosing to bowl on a dusty wicket Jeff Chapman and Miles
stood out being both difficult to score off snd taking wickets regularly.
Miles finishing with a four wicket haul. Chingfords number three bat managed to
be not out 43 having come in in the fourth over. Opening partnership of 39 from
Cripps and Cripps and a bullish 28 off 10 balls from Phil Olivers we reached
the target of 124 for 5 wickets.

Lost at the toss

BCC not enough, MH won by a mile
The stand in skipper claims it was all down to the oppo calling tails correctly and putting us in on a very damp wicket. Despite initially slow progress our batsmen did a reasonable job with Darren especially making it look a lot easier than the rest, but we all contrived to get out to varying degrees of poor shot selection - none more so than the skipper who, with eight wickets down and having just instructed the incoming Tony Heyes to make sure we batted out the overs, got himself stumped with seven overs still to go. We ended with 130 something - when a par score would have been around 150.
Middleton House lost their first wicket after only three balls when their openeing bat called for a suicide single and was run out by a quite brilliant throw from extra cover by Dave Washington, demolishing the stumps at the bowlers end with the batsmen barely crossed. They were then kept quiet for the first 15 overs or so, scoring at around 2 per over, but the conditions were getting easier and we failed to take many wickets, and at the end they finished at a canter with several overs to spare.
MOTM Dave Washington, for a brilliant piece of fielding and a steady innnings of 14 runs which for a while promised to see us to a decent total.
We batted first on winning the toss, Codicote turned up with only 10 men and three of those looked under 14. We had a fairly good start from Mick and Bob, Mick went on to score a hundred with Dave Washington scoring a quick 47 not out. We ended up scoring 237 in 40 overs and really thought that we would get Codicote kids out very quickly. We nearly lost this match with Codicote falling just short by 16 runs and their 17 year old batting at 3 scoring a 144 (although we dropped him 4 times which didn't help). Bowling-wise we were very thin as Pramod was injured so Matt played instead of him. Jeremy bowled well and our biggest plus was Tony Heyes bowling for the first time this season got 1/31 in his 8 overs, bowling a good line with less pace than the batsmen were looking for and swinging it like a banana.
Match Report: 17th May, 2:00PM, Harpenden II, Bamville CC
We finally won our first match on sunday
Result:
Bamville 194-5, Harpenden II 178ao
On winning the toss we batted first and got a useful start from Mick Tizard and Peter Moss. The batting performance came from both John Harle and John Smith who both hit fifties, John
Harle top scoring with 55 and John Smith getting 50 useful contributions from Pramod and Tony Heyes. We ending getting 194 for 5.
John Harle got us to good start getting a wicket in his first over and in hisover all spell ending up with 5 wickets for 15 in his 8 overs. Good support from Michel Taylor, 2 for 18, and a wicket each for Pramod, Richie and myself.
Luckily the Saturday youth policy was in full operationas we played a 50 over game.Boxmoorchose to bat and although we bowled well we could not seem to takewickets. An opening partnership of over100 ensued until Geoff took the first wicket having dropped the other openerTWICE(who got the fielding trophy!!!)
Steady batting meant we were againchasing 265 but in 50 overs this week.
Anirudha was asked to open and at 49-1off 7 overs, Ani 47 n.o. things were looking up. He continued to plunder viathe aerial route until he got cramp and retired on 72 we then lost wicketsregularly only Iqbal 24, Geoff 27 and Jeff Chapman at the end showingresistance. Ani finally out last for 95, we ended on 197 all out (on ourfeet!).

Close again!
Result:
Old Citizens 264; Bamville 253-9
After a lengthy wait for the opposition to arrive we got
underway at 2:35. The opposition did not bother to play themselves in scoring 35
off of the first three overs. At 20 overs they had almost 140 and finally
scraped together a paltry 264-5.Only
Iqbal seemed to escape with reasonable bowling figures of 8-0-30-1.With a very positive approach Peck and
Anirudh put on 50 in 8 overs and the momentum continued when Darren joined
Peck and took the score past the 100 and on to 125 at 20 overs. Unfortunately
Peck was caught for an excellent 57 and Darren went for 47.Although the rest of the batsman tried hard
they could not seem to find the boundaries we needed with the exception of
young Simon Cripps who hit a classy 30 no.We eventually fell 11 short of the total 253-9
Match Report: 3rd May, 2:00PM, Players & Jesters, Bamville CC
First home game
Result:
P&J 211 from 40 overs; Bamville 142 -9
On winning the toss i
put the oppostion in who went on to score 211 in 40 overs. Jeremy bowled 8 overs 1/24, Mike Taylor (8 overs for 17 runs) kept it really tight, Richie picked up 2 wickets towards the end as well as Pram who bowled well.
We didn't bat well and lost lost both our openers very early, John Smith and Pram
were going well until John slipped going for a second run and was run out.
We ended up getting 142 thanks to Muks who hobbled in as the last man and got a
good 30 not out. He and Darren Hinks batted well at the end.
Pram was the man of the match with his 51 runs and couple of wickets.
A special mention: Darren Hinks fielded really well.
We bowled first and bowled them all out
for 75 with Charlie Yates and Jeff Chapman both taking five wickets. On a
suspect wicket we just managed 70 all out. With half the team being bowled by
balls that shot along the ground. (Mine actually burrowed under the ground - Nigel) Some good performances by Philip (highest
with 23) and Andrew Cripps.
Man of the Match: Both Charlie Yates
and Jeff Chapman

Last ball drama
Result:
Bamville 122/7 Dolphins 120/?
Very exciting low scoring game against Dolphins on Saturday.Put into bat on a very unpredictable wicket we patiently constructed a score of122-7 in our overs. Bob Norrish top scored with able assistance from Peter Mossand Darren. Early bowling from Jeremy Peet and Iqbal was very economical butlooked like we were not going to take any wickets until both of them tookwickets when told it was their last over. Peter Moss then came on to bowl amiserly spell until unfortunately dislocating his finger trying for a caughtand bowled. Darren given the job of finishing Peter`s over bowled thebatsman first ball. Wickets then began to fall quite regularly but alsoruns were being scored. In the end it came down to them needing 7 off the lastover. Geoff took the responsibility and bowled four dot balls but decided tomake it interesting by letting them hit a four off of the fifth. one dotball later Bamville successful by 2 runs. Great game.

Close, but not close enough...
Result:
GG 193/5 Bamville 183 for ?
Gaddesden batted on a damp pitch and a good opening spellfrom Lee Anderson backed up by Matt Arnerich kept the score below 2 an overwithout taking any wickets. Bowling change to Peter Moss (8 overs 2-25)andGeoff (6 overs 1-18) managed to produce the first wickets and kept the run ratereasonable up to 20 overs but after that the bowling took a bit of a hammeringand Gaddesden ended up on 193 for 5. The batting started solidly but wefound it as difficult to adjust to the damp pitch scoring quite slowly. Darren 40 and new man Pram Mistry 52, on debut, added some pace to the battingand Geoff hit a rapid 20 - but we fell 10 runs short.
